Energy Recovery Secures Contract to Supply New PX Q650 Energy Recovery Device to Major Saudi Arabia Desalination Plant
- PX Q650 devices will deliver industry-leading energy efficiency to a major new seawater desalination plant in Saudi Arabia
- This order follows PX Q650 contracts secured earlier this year at multiple desalination sites, marking rapid adoption of Energy Recovery's newest energy recovery device
- The PX Q650 is built to have the highest availability and lowest operating costs of any device in its class
SAN LEANDRO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Energy Recovery (Nasdaq: ERII), a global leader in energy-efficient technology enabling affordable, reliable water and reduced emissions, today announced a new contract to supply PX Q650 devices, the newest and highest-capacity device in its PX® Pressure Exchanger® line, to a major new seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant in Saudi Arabia, which will be among the top 10 largest plants in the world when complete.
Saudi Arabia relies on desalination for more than 70 percent of its potable water supply and has no permanent rivers or lakes, making energy-efficient desalination central to the Kingdom's water security and its Vision 2030 goals. Earlier this year, Energy Recovery announced its intention to open a manufacturing facility in Saudi Arabia to serve desalination customers in the Kingdom and across the wider Middle East and North Africa region.
"We engineered the PX Q650 for the performance, scale, and operating demands of the world's leading desalination plants, so seeing it specified only months after launch confirms what we set out to build," said Rodney Clemente, Senior Vice President of Water at Energy Recovery. "An operator running a plant of that size thinks in decades, not years, and capacity, specific energy consumption, and uptime are what shape those operating costs. We're proud to support the Kingdom's water security goals with our highest-capacity technology yet."
This flagship order adds to a growing set of PX Q650 wins, following contracts for desalination projects in Asia and the Middle East earlier this year. Released in March 2026, the PX Q650 is the most efficient energy recovery device on the market, with the highest availability in its class. A single moving part and a 30-year design life drive the lowest operating expenses over the life of a plant.
Energy Recovery's PX devices operate within the reverse osmosis process, recovering energy from the high-pressure reject stream to sharply reduce the energy needed to turn seawater into fresh water. PX technology has reduced seawater desalination energy use by up to 60 percent across three decades in the market, supporting the daily cleaning of 48.5 million cubic meters of water (equivalent to 19,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools) and saving customers an estimated $8 billion in energy expenses annually.
