Energy Recovery, Inc. to Deliver Presentation at United Nations about Benefits of Desalination

Leading Provider of Energy Recovery Devices Will Outline How Seawater Desalination is an Economically Viable Solution to the World's Mounting Water Crisis

SAN LEANDRO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Energy Recovery, Inc. (NASDAQ: ERII), a leader in the design and development of energy recovery devices for desalination, today announced that executives will deliver a presentation entitled "Affordable Desalination as the Sustainable Solution" at the United Nations (U.N.) headquarters on Wednesday, October 14, 2009. H.P. Michelet, executive chairman of the board, and G.G. Pique, president and CEO, will illustrate the significant impact of the mounting global water crisis and how technology advancements have established desalination as an economically viable solution.

"Global water shortages have reached crisis levels, especially in the developing world where 98 percent of water-related deaths occur. There is clearly a need for a long-term, sustainable solution, and we are grateful to have the opportunity to speak at the U.N. to deliver this critically important message," said Pique. "Thanks to ERI's PX(TM) Pressure Exchanger device and other technology advancements, desalination has become the definitive answer to providing affordable clean water to those in need."

ERI was invited to present at the U.N. by NGO Sustainability, which was formed to monitor the U.N.'s sustainable development activities.

"Delivering fresh water to the world's population, especially in developing nations, has emerged as a top global concern that might be addressed. Our committee is dedicated to solving this challenge through affordable, sustainable methods, and we are pleased to provide innovative companies like ERI with the opportunity to showcase their solutions."

"Delivering fresh water to the world's population, especially in developing countries, is a major global concern. NGO Sustainability is honored to bring ERI's innovative technology to the attention of the United Nations Community," said Roma Stibravy, chairperson of NGO Sustainability. "It is hoped that by showcasing ERI's invaluable answer to a major world concern, we can look forward to increasing U.N. development projects dedicated to alleviating and mitigating water challenges through such sustainable solutions."

ERI's PX devices operate at up to 98 percent efficiency and reduce the energy consumption of seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) systems by up to 60 percent, making desalination a cost-effective solution for clean water supply. PX devices also reduce the carbon footprint of desalination, saving more than 700 megawatts (MW) of energy and reducing CO2 emissions by more than 2.3 million tons per year worldwide. More than 6,700 PX devices are currently deployed or under contract to be installed at desalination plants across the globe, helping to supply affordable, clean water to more than 29 million people.
